Seasonal Foods for June by Jesse Bluma

Seasonal Foods for June

If you are looking for something new for the dinner table, what is in season, or how to save a bit of cash, then use this list of selected seasonal foods.

Gooseberries are pictured above.  What's a gooseberry?  These fruit are related to currants and grown in areas with cool, humid climates such as northern California, many regions in Europe, and south Asia.  The next time you are in the store or farmers market pick some up to use in summer pies, tarts, jam, flavored water, or dehydrate to make dried gooseberries.

Gooseberries have a long food history, especially in South America.  Prized for its nutrition, high in vitamin C, these berries are common in the regions of the old empires of the Inca (Peru, Cusco, Machu Picchu) and Aztecs (Tenochitlan/Mexico City).  If growing gooseberries at home, follow guidelines for ripeness of your variety.

boysenberries
cantaloupe
currants

string beans

What is Etsy? Oh, yes! Etsi!

What is Etsy?  Oh, yes!  Etsi!

Have you checked out Etsy yet?  The site is an online marketplace for buying and selling all things handmade.  Their philosophy, "Buy, Sell, and Live Handmade", is terrific.  "Etsy was conceived by Rob Kalin in early 2005.  A painter, carpenter, and photographer, Rob found there was no viable marketplace to exhibit and sell his creations online — other E-commerce sites having become too inundated with overstock electronics and broken appliances.

Ever industrious, he, along with Chris Maguire and Haim Schoppik, designed the site, wrote the code, assembled the servers, spliced the cables, and launched Etsy on June 18th, 2005 after only three sleepless months.

Kalin said that he named the site Etsy because he 'wanted a nonsense word because I wanted to build the brand from scratch.  I was watching Fellini's 8 ½ and writing down what I was hearing.  In Italian, you say 'etsi' a lot.  It means 'oh, yes.'  And in Latin, it means 'and if.'"

Take a look at this delicious song by Lonnie Mack...
Lyrics

Chocolate on my fingers, icing on my lips
Sugar diabetes and blubber on my hips
I keep the night light burning in the kitchen baby
So I can go downstairs and cruise
I got them chocolate chip
Hot morsel cookie blues

I hide'em in a cabinet, I keep'em in a jar
For emergency's you know
I keep'em in the Glove compartment of my car
And I can't live without'em
They git' me higher than I can get
I got them chocolate chip
Hot morsel cookie blues
Doctor says I'm crazy
You better give'em up and quick
Or you'll be pushing up daisies because
Boy you definitely sick
I couldn't quit if I wanted to
Yeah I don't wanna lose
It's them chocolate chip
Hot morsel cookie blues

-by Lonnie Mack

"Lonnie's early music bridged the gap between '50s rockabilly and the psychedelic blues-rock of the following decade, and, like the best rock and roll, his work continues to embody a mixture of white and black roots music.  Rock, blues, soul and country -- Lonnie brings them all together for a sound that has been all his own.

Lonnie was born in 1941 in Harrison, Indiana -- some twenty miles west of Cincinnati.  From family sing-alongs he developed a love of country music, while he absorbed rhythm and blues from the late-night black radio stations and gospel from his local church.  Starting off with a few chords that he learned from his mother, Lonnie gradually blended all the sounds he heard around him into his own individual style.

He began playing professionally in his early teens (he quit school after a fight with his sixth-grade teacher), working clubs and roadhouses around the tri-state border area of Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio.  In 1958, he bought the guitar he still plays today -- Gibson Flying V serial number 7.  In addition to his live gigs, Lonnie began playing sessions for the King and Fraternity labels in Cincinnati.  He recorded with blues and r and b greats like Hank Ballard, Freddie King and James Brown. "
