California: A great day at the beach

California:  A great day at the beach
Pointe Viven - Jesse Bluma. All rights reserved.

Packed a lunch, water, and headed to the beach.  I go on an almost yearly camping trip to San Onofre, this is a great spot for just a day trip to the beach too.  San Onofre is located next to a military base in San Diego, California.  Often you can watch the Camp Pendleton Airfield Operations.  I caught a snap of a helicopter maneuver above.

"San Onofre State Beach is a rare 3,000-acre scenic coastal-canyon park with high environmental values and recreation use.  The park includes three distinct areas: San Onofre Bluffs, San Onofre Surf Beach, and San Mateo Campground.

San Onofre Bluffs offers camping and day-use parking along Old Highway 101 adjacent to the sandstone bluffs.  The beach below is popular with swimmers and surfers with six rugged dirt access trails cut into the bluff above.  All campsites include a fire pit and picnic table.  The campground offers cold outdoor showers and chemical toilets.  No hookups are available however there is a dump-station.

San Onofre Surf Beach offers a world renowned and historical surf break.  The beach is strictly available for day-use with no camping.  Chemical toilets and a limited number of fire pits are available.

San Onofre - San Mateo Campground lies a short distance inland from the 3.5-miles of sandy beaches within San Onofre State Beach.  A 1.5-mile Nature Trail connects the campground to Trestles Beach, a world class surfing site. San Mateo Creek flows just east of the campground outward towards the ocean creating key riparian and wetland habitats which host some rare and even endangered species.  All campsites include a fire pit and picnic table.  Hookup sites are available with electricity and water.  Other amenities includes a dump-station, hot indoor showers, and flush toilets. Camping is available year-round."  For more information on San Onofre go to www.parks.ca.gov.

Bugles Across America: Deserves a Cookie

Bugles Across America

"Bugles Across America was founded in 2000 by Tom Day, when Congress passed legislation stating Veterans had a right to at least 2 uniformed military people to fold the flag and play taps on a CD player. Bugles Across America was begun to take this a step further, and in recognition of the service these Veterans provided their country, we felt that every Veteran deserved a live rendition of taps played by a live Bugler. To this end, we are actively seeking volunteers to provide this valuable service to Veterans and their families."

Greek Village Salad: Salty Meets Sweet

Greek Village Salad:  Salty Meets Sweet
Pointe Viven - Jesse Bluma. All rights reserved.

My sister gave me an authentic Greek cookbook by the renowned Vefa Alexiadou.  I have been cooking my way through the book. This salad is my version of the one in her cookbook, "Greek Village Salad".  The perfectly salty ingredients of this salad go well with a chocolate dessert.

Salad

2 organic tomatoes, sliced into eighths as a flower
1 organic cucumber, sliced into rounds
red onion to taste, sliced
Kalamata olives
feta cheese, sprinkled on top
2 hard boiled eggs (Place eggs in a saucepan.  Cover with water by 1 inch.  Bring water to a boil over medium heat.  Cover and remove when water reaches a boil.  Set aside for 12 minutes.)
parsley, snipped on top
salt to taste
black pepper to taste
squeeze of organic lemon

Dressing

2 parts olive oil
1 part red wine vinegar
Pinch of dried oregano
Salt to taste
Pepper to taste

Whisk dressing ingredients together in a bowl.
Arrange salad on a plate or serving dish.
Drizzle dressing on salad.

Make this salad and serve with my chocolate cookies made with good ingredients and quality control.

Summer Entertaining Tips

Summer Entertaining Tips
Pointe Viven - Jesse Bluma. All rights reserved.

Simple, fun, and entertaining are three great rules of thumb for throwing a summer party. Avoid spending a lot of sand dollars, the boring, and the usual. Use the steps below to create your party.

Motif: Design your party around a central idea, color, or repeated element. Throw a cookie party!

Imagination: Supply guests with a dozen or so cookies.  Hold a friendly competition to turn the cookies into the best ice cream sandwich, candy train, or eating competition.

Scavenger Hunt: Children of all ages enjoy this party game, guests may be given a list of ten items to collect from neighbors, the outdoors, or your own backyard. You may also make the game more challenging by giving clues to guests that lead them to a final destination. Remember to have a prize for the winning team.

Wrap skewers in floral tape; wrapping a candy at the top and at various positions on the skewer (make approximately 17 for a small basket).
