Pointe Viven Visualizations

Pointe Viven Visualizations

This is an excellent discovery.  Many Eyes is a visual maker.  There are several unique ways to use this tool.  IBM describes it as "the power of human visual intelligence".

Many Eyes has many applications for teachersstudentsbusinessesorganizations, and more.  Teachers and students familiar with Wordle may prefer Many Eyes as it allows for more customization, descriptions, and options.  The cloud visualization above is an example of one of the kinds of visualizations you can make with Many Eyes.  The most frequent words are portrayed with larger font.

After reading the directions and playing around a bit with the Many Eyes website you will learn how to exactly utilize all the options.  The first basic step is to choose data or words you wish to input, such as a passage from a novel, a speech, or statistics.  The second step is to select how you want the data or words to display, as a cloud or net.  After that you will need to provide a title and other descriptive information for your visualization.

Print this recipe for flavorful pancakes and keep it in your recipe binder.

Easily make the most of your next breakfast or brunch with these perfect healthier pancakes.  These pancakes are light, tender, stay together, and happen to be a healthier version.  Not the heavy bricks you may have eaten in the past.  Fresh seasonal fruit makes a great topper or spread.

Ingredients

2 1/2 cups organic cake flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
2 Tablespoons baking powder
1 Tablespoon organic honey
1 Tablespoon vegetable oil
2 1/2 cups soy milk

Toppings

Tools and Other

Hand mixer
Stove and Pan or Griddle
Mixing bowl
Mixing spoon
Measuring spoons
Measuring cups
Serving plates and utensils

Directions

Use a large bowl and hand mixer to lightly combine all the ingredients.

Combine until slightly lumpy.

It is better to under mix than to over mix, if too lumpy you may continue mixing.

Set the mixture aside for 5 minutes, then fold, then set aside for another 5 minutes to rise.

Fold again.

This can be done the night before cooking, keeping in the refrigerator.

Heat a heavy frying pan on medium or set a griddle at 350° Fahrenheit (176.667° Celsius)

Lightly spray the pan or griddle with cooking spray.

Test the pan or griddle is ready for cooking by dropping a teaspoon of water on the surface, the water should evaporate immediately when at the correct temperature.

Gently scoop and drop 1/4 cupfuls of batter onto the pan or griddle.

Bake until bubbles in the batter begin to form and break (about 2 minutes), then turn the pancakes and cook the other side.

A nice crispy edge will form.

Top with your favorite organic jam, fresh fruit, and real maple syrup.

Enjoy!

Cell Phones for Soldiers Deserves a Cookie Award

Cell Phones for Soldiers

The personal stories of triumph, hard work, and genuine achievement do not always make headline news.  Yet, we take notice when a person is able to break through the minutiae of what often constitutes news.  Brother and sister team Robbie and Brittany Bergquist are those rare individuals that make us take genuine notice.

"Cell Phones For Soldiers is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to serving troops and veterans with free communication services and emergency funding.  The organization was founded by Robbie and Brittany Bergquist at the ages of 12 and 13.

You fuel Cell Phones For Soldiers’ charitable mission through generous monetary contributions and the recycling of donated mobile devices.  Donations of newer or gently-used cell phones and tablets from all wireless carriers and brands are accepted."

Create a Dynamic Summer Salad with Walnut Dressing

Walnut Dressing Recipe
Jesse Bluma at Pointe Viven. All rights reserved.

The best salads are those created with favorite, seasonal ingredients.  A mix of textures, flavors, colors, and fragrances.  This walnut dressing liberates the taste buds from the humdrum.

Utilizing seasonal, local, or home grown ingredients makes for the best of salads.  Summer foods include apricots, cherries, corn, nectarines, peaches, pears, plums, strawberries, string beans, Swiss chard, yellow summer squash, and zucchini.

Walnut Dressing Ingredients

Coat your favorite mix of summer salad ingredients with the walnut dressing and enjoy.

My Talk with Dr. Brent Ridge: Favorite Cookies

My Talk with Dr. Brent Ridge

What an excellent opportunity to chat with Dr. Brent Ridge.  You may know Dr. Ridge from several TV shows.   Additionally, he works with the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai, focusing on living well as we age.  Brent explained some of the fascinating aspects of owning a farm and growing his own food.

Brent also started his own store, Beekman 1802 Mercantile, offering hand crafted and artisan products.  Among the products sold:  goat milk soap, edibles, and clothing.  The mercantile is located in Sharon Springs, "one of the most famous spa destinations in the world, boasting three different mineral springs – magnesium, sulfur, and iron.

First prized for their healing powers by Native Americans, the waters later spawned grand hotels and bathhouses which drew distinguished crowds from the mid-19th century up until the 1970s.  It’s summer social scene was covered by the New York Times society pages,  which chronicled the arrival and activities of presidents, celebrities, and elite world travelers.

After a steep decline in the late 20th century, the town has rallied, capitalizing on its historic roots to draw in visitors with popular annual festivals."

It seems Dr. Ridge is one of the main people responsible for the resurgence of the general store and 1800s.  He also told me that his favorite cookies are "oatmeal raisin".

Liberty Enlightening the World

Liberty Enlightening the World

What a dynamic trip to New York, New York.
One of my favorite cities to visit and explore.

Please enjoy these photos.

Liberty Island

"The Statue of Liberty (French: Statue de la Liberté), officially titled Liberty Enlightening the World (French: la Liberté éclairant le monde), dedicated on October 28, 1886, is a monument commemorating the centennial of the signing of the United States Declaration of Independence, given to the by the people of France to represent the friendship between the two countries established during the American Revolution."

Ellis Island

Ellis Island was only open from 1892 to 1924, so if any of your ancestors claimed to have come in through here it may be a bit of a tall tale.  "On average, the inspection process took approximately 3-7 hours.  On a typical day at the Ellis Island Immigration Station, immigrants came face to face with inspectors, interpreters, nurses, doctors, social workers, and many others.  As a large federal facility employing approximately five hundred employees at a time, Ellis Island was a well-organized workforce."

New York Skyline

Tip:  Visiting Liberty Island and Ellis Island can be a long day.  Be prepared for wait times and changing weather conditions.

Succulent Update by Jesse Bluma

Succulent Update

My first posting on my new plants got a lot of interest.  Here is an update on how the succulents are fairing so far.  This succulent display was given to me one December as a gift.  Succulents are a great weekend project, interesting to learn about, and make a thoughtful present.  These plants come in unusual shapes and shades of green, with some flowering.  You can see they are doing well.

You can begin your succulent pot from cuttings, using one species or a variety of species.  If you take clippings from a plant, ensure that the tools are sharp and sterile, plant disease can easily spread.  A good professional gardner or arboretum, for example The Fullerton Arboretum, can help you make the most of your propagating.

It is essential to utilize the proper soil for you plants, such as Kellogg Garden Products.  Succulents, palms, cacti, and citrus require a certain moisture level, good drainage, and nutrients.  Organic material, nothing synthetic, is also beneficial to providing the proper medium for plant growth.
