Iced Hermits by Jesse Bluma

Harken back to Cape Cod in the 1800s. Clipper ships, long sea voyages, and great adventures with the discovery of new spices. These bar cookies have great American heritage, are rightly sweetened and spiced with ginger and raisins. Made with organic and natural ingredients.

True Food Kitchen Review by Jesse Bluma

True Food Kitchen Review

A great restaurant to dine outdoors in California at night.  Minimalistic, sleek, and fun with lots of outdoor heating and fire pits.  I actually ran into the Real Housewives of Orange County here.

What to order for dinner?

Roasted Chicken with Farro, Red Spinach, Cranberry and Walnut

Grilled Steelhead Salmon with Quinoa, Local Beet, and Preserved Lemon Salad

The red spinach has great full flavor, I would like a plate of only this with the delicious farro, cranberries and walnuts.  The salmon was cooked well and is good for you, a bonus.  For some reason my martini was more like an Icee.

"When it comes to healthy eating, it seems like the focus is always on the rules. Eat this. Don’t eat that.

But what if you found a way to actually enjoy food that happens to be good for you too?

True Food Kitchen is about flavor, freshness, variety, quality, nutrition and balance. It’s about enjoying healthy whole foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals.

We’re here to make healthy eating a much more flavorful and satisfying experience. Because when you eat right, you just feel better. It’s true."--Michael Stebner, Executive Chef

The menu is based on the Anti-Inflammatory Diet & Food Pyramid of Dr. Andrew Weil.

You Deserve a Cookie: Operation International Children

You Deserve a Cookie:  Operation International Children

Thanks to all your excellent efforts 24 school supply kits were sent to children around the globe.  I appreciate your help in donating these important items so children may learn and grow.  The friends of Pointe Viven are awesome.

Operation International Children

Actor Gary Sinise (Forrest Gump, Apollo 13) and author Laura Hillenbrand (Seabiscuit: An American Legend) launched Operation International Children, a program that enables American students to send School Supply Kits to other students around the world. Kept in one-room buildings without air conditioning, fans, heaters, windows, solid floors, or even toilets, students lack the basic supplies that American children take for granted. Libraries and books are almost nonexistent. Without these basic tools of education, children face an uphill struggle to learn. "Imagine sending your child to a school in which there are virtually no books, no pencils, no paper, no blackboards," says Hillenbrand. This is the reality for many children. The need for help is so great and widespread, for some 1,500 schools.

Please keep supporting Operation International Children

Azteca Mexican Restaurant and Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey Review

Azteca Mexican Restaurant and Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey

Ever have those existential dreams where you are surrounded by a trillion Elvises while in Mexico?  That is Azteca Mexican Restaurant in Garden Grove, California.  There are many restaurants with the same name, remember they are different.  Elvis first appears to greet you outside the restaurant, then as you enter it is sensory overload.  Elvis pictures, buttons, statues, posters, and memorabilia adorn the counters, line the walls, and cover the ceiling.

This is not Border Grill nor MESA Grill.  If you are looking for good priced drinks and karaoke (Japanese for "empty orchestra"), then bring some friends and have a good time.  At 10:30 P.M.  those under 21 are asked to leave, I'm not sure why if they are with their parents.  I went for a friend's birthday, we sang a lot and tried out Jack Daniel's and Tennessee Honey.  The flavor is sweet and cinnamon spicy, which lightens and turns into an almost chocolate finish.  I liked it with Coke.

"Back in 1957, the "first" Azteca Mexican Restaurant was opened by Aunt Connie on Garden Grove Blvd. a short distance from here. But Connie's lifelong ambition was to own a restaurant on what is now Historic Main Street and she fulfilled that dream in 1980 when she moved Azteca to its present location.  Aunt Connie had been an avid collector of antiques so the Azteca decor of old reflected that interest.  Most importantly, she was a gifted cook who shared her love for authentic Mexican cuisine with Garden Grove until 1993 when she turned over the reins to her nephew, J.J. Jauregui."

The Laguna Coffee Company Review by Jesse Bluma

The Laguna Coffee Company Review

The Laguna Coffee Company offers a large selection that includes coffee, espresso, blended drinks, smoothies, Italian soda, kid's drinks, pastries, breakfast, and sandwiches.  I have not yet tried their food items; I do like their vanilla latte with non-fat milk.  Organic options are also available.  On a warm day you can eat outside in the side courtyard or take a walk with your coffee.  A lot of surfing across the street.  Laguna Coffee Company also takes phone and online orders.

Parking:  There is a free lot and on-street metered parking.  If parking on the street anywhere in Laguna Beach beware the high curb, it damages car doors and is a stepping hazard.  The lines to order can get long, don't go in needing a STAT order of caffeine.  Homemade coffee is a good way to spend your money, although if you are in the area and want to sample different coffees this is a good spot.

"There is something about the Laguna Coffee Company, established in 1991, that causes its owners to treat it more like a passion than a business. Current owners, Paul and Cathy Ackley and Peggy Warner, have been coffee aficionados and customers of Laguna Coffee for years. Purchasing the company in 2006 from Sylvain Touati, French ex-patriot and master roaster, was a natural extension of their love for all things coffee.  We find the best coffees in the world, to satisfy the cultivated palate of our coffee customers and roast the beans in-house. As an independently owned and operated coffee boutique, we provide freshness and quality in our coffees that chain coffee houses can't offer."
