New York Fashion Week: Men’s Review by Jesse Bluma

New York Fashion Week Men’s Review

New York Fashion Week originated with Eleanor Lambert, a publicist during the 1920s and 1930s.  This is the first year since the 1990s there has been a standalone showcase for men’s wear.  During the 1990s men’s was combined within the week of women’s shows.  The Council of Fashion Designers of America brought back the men’s week this year showcasing brands such as Todd Snyder, Thom Browne, Public School, Robert Geller, Michael Kors, Carlos Garciavelez, and Calvin Klein.  Although, this caused more travel and expense for industry insiders, buyers, and press.  The week was presented by Amazon, Cadillac, and East Dane, and others.

Trends:  monochrome, white, army green, stripes, light-washed out colors.  While classics are the way to go in wardrobe, incorporating some of the trends from designers will give you some variety.  Monochrome was well established within the fashion lines, including executions of black and white and varying tones of a single color.  White was another common color presented on the runways, especially white shoes.  Army green or olive green military inspired jackets was another prevailing item.  Stripes.  A lot of stripes.  In traditional and creative designs.  These may be suitable for a fashion show, underscoring show, and may be incorporated into your wardrobe in a well thought out manner.  Light-washed out colors also made an appearance in shirts and shorts.

The curated looks above to provide an overview of New York Fashion Week:  Men’s.  The models in these looks represent some of the trends and best of the lines.  You may see the same or similar looks in stores within the next year.

The images we see in ads, movies, and media can influence our goals and perceptions.  Keep in mind the people in those professions spend a lot of time and have a lot of time to look their best.  Or computer graphics best.  Rather than focusing on images in media, focus on what is the right fit, look, and use of clothes for you.  As I learned from fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, fashion is about what is trending in stores and style is more about your own personality.

Calvin Klein, business mogul and designer, once explained to me at a fashion show that what people wear should be modern, clean, and make them look their best.  Personal responsibility is at the heart of dressing well.  Study magazines, people in the streets, in school, models, and actors in your age range.  Also, seek out knowledgeable salespeople in stores and vintage shops.

Todd Synder’s collection stood out as one of the most well focused.  The clothing from shirts, jackets, pants, and shoes were fully sustained and consistent in design work and quality.  His show was clear and effective in its vision, providing a strong beginning and finale.  Todd Snyder began his career working in a haberdashery in De Moines, Iowa.  After years of apprenticeship and work he designed for Ralph Lauren, the Gap, and J. Crew.  He then went on to launch his own brand and his collections can be found at Bergdorf Goodman, Ron Herman, and Neiman Marcus.

The Pointe is a quaint, seaside community.  It is nestled in the Orange Coast of California.  The town is situated beachside along the pristine Pacific Ocean, between magnificent cliffs and headlands.  Residents have nicknamed it the “California Riviera”.  The town was established during the 1920s along state route 1, between Los Angeles and San Diego.  Kite-flying, boat races, golf, and surfing drew crowds and residents to the promontory.  Actor James Cagney was drawn here to open a movie theater.  The Pointe is bold, panoramic, and truly alluring.

Cooking and entertaining is an opportunity to share with family and friends.  Growing up I learned the basics of good cooking, baking, entertaining, gardening, and entrepreneurship.  The Pointe in the location and Viven is Spanish for living life.  And living in this fabled locale serves as a delicious bakery and idea-factory.

See photos from my home in June.

“Nature is a setting that fits equally well a comic or a mourning piece.  In good health, the air is a cordial of incredible virtue.  Crossing a bare common, in snow puddles, at twilight, under a clouded sky, without having in my thoughts any occurrence of special good fortune, I have enjoyed a perfect exhilaration.  I am glad to the brink of fear.”

--Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Nature”

Martha Stewart Café:  Martha’s Blend Coffee

The Martha Stewart Café provides a wonderful assortment of coffee, tea, and baked goods.  Martha’s Blend ground coffee is a medium-roast sourced from beans across the globe, including Kenya, Guatemala, and Indonesia.  I enjoyed the warm, chocolate aroma and flavor of this bold and well composed coffee.  The coffee beans are curated from Kobrick Coffee, Jersey City, New Jersey, who provide sustainable products.

“Welcome to the Martha Stewart Café, a dream of mine that has finally become a reality!  Inspired by the wonderful coffee shops I’ve visited all around the world, it’s a place where I can share my favorite handcrafted coffees, teas, and bakery treats with customers who will enjoy them as I do.
