Deserves the Cookie Award - Perfect Student Shares His Secret
The personal stories of triumph, hard work, and genuine achievement do not always make headline news. Yet, we take notice when a person is able to break through the minutiae of what often constitutes news. Marshall Rule is one of those rare individuals that makes us take genuine notice.
"Marshall Rule...graduated from Lutheran High School in Orange on Thursday, June 2, without ever having missed a day of school, all the way from kindergarten. He attended elementary school at Zion Lutheran school in Anaheim.
'Around sixth grade, I realized that I've made it this far ... might as well just try making it all the way from kindergarten to eighth grade.' Marshall plans to study kinesiology at Cal State Fullerton."
Context
Absences are understandable for students, such as for doctor appointments or moving to a new area.
Learning is a sequential process. Teachers spiral the subject matter, there is a scope, and a sequence to building knowledge, clarifications, skills, and concepts.
"Missing two days per month (even in elementary school) can allow your child to fall behind. Track absences and make sure they do not miss too many days of school." (Ad Council)
It's not all-or-nothing. Attendance, paying attention, participation, and hard work in school are behaviors for mastering learning. Yet, there are valid reasons for absences, such as illness, bereavement, and family crisis. Ultimately, as Marshall Rule exemplified, personal goals are important for success and simply that. Personal goals.
