Seasonal Foods for June by Jesse Bluma

Seasonal Foods for June

If you are looking for something new for the dinner table, what is in season, or how to save a bit of cash, then use this list of selected seasonal foods.

Gooseberries are pictured above.  What's a gooseberry?  These fruit are related to currants and grown in areas with cool, humid climates such as northern California, many regions in Europe, and south Asia.  The next time you are in the store or farmers market pick some up to use in summer pies, tarts, jam, flavored water, or dehydrate to make dried gooseberries.

Gooseberries have a long food history, especially in South America.  Prized for its nutrition, high in vitamin C, these berries are common in the regions of the old empires of the Inca (Peru, Cusco, Machu Picchu) and Aztecs (Tenochitlan/Mexico City).  If growing gooseberries at home, follow guidelines for ripeness of your variety.

boysenberries
cantaloupe
currants
gooseberries
string beans
yellow summer squash
