Rocco Dispirito and Me

Rocco Dispirito and Me

"Best selling author of the Now Eat This! series, runs Now Eat This Truck! in NYC and host of the syndicated series Now Eat This! w/ Rocco DiSpirito."

I recently followed Rocco on Twitter and he soon followed me back.  That is one of the great benefits of social media.  It connects likeminded people, can be instructive, and enhance professional contacts.

Why use Twitter?  It may not be necessary to have an account with every social networking service.  Twitter is great for micro-blogging and getting right to the main idea.  In a flash millions can spread important news and social movements.  Respect and careful use is of course necessary, as in everything we do in life.  Life is short, so make sure when you tweet, post on Facebook, or make a call that it is useful, informative, or helpful.

Connect with Rocco and me on Twitter.

Terminated by Amazon and Jerry Brown

Terminated by Amazon and Jerry Brown

Sometimes we are unaware of how intertwined we are with the federal government.  The story of taxing online retailers illustrates the constant tension between government elites, corporate owners, and consumers.  If you are unsatisfied with the tax system, then be sure to let your representatives know.

Below is the letter sent by Amazon to associates because of changes to the tax system.

"Hello,
For well over a decade, the Amazon Associates Program has worked with thousands of California residents.  Unfortunately, a potential new law that may be signed by Governor Brown compels us to terminate this program for California-based participants.  It specifically imposes the collection of taxes from consumers on sales by online retailers - including but not limited to those referred by California-based marketing affiliates like you - even if those retailers have no physical presence in the state."

7.8 quake could affect 3 of 4 jobs

7.8 quake could affect 3 of 4 jobs

Do you remember the fable "The Ants and the Grasshopper" by Aesop?  It is not only important to be prepared for winter, it is important to be prepared for other acts of nature.

"Quake expert Lucy Jones, chief scientist of the USGS Multi Hazards Project, noted that modern codes were designed to prevent buildings from collapsing and killing people during a major quake.

'An earthquake won't kill you, but it very well can bankrupt you,' Jones said.

The report estimates 73% of businesses here and 77% of the jobs would be in areas that would get hit with very strong or destructive shaking. The jobs potentially affected represent $47.5 billion in annual payroll."

Water pouches and emergency kits for your home and car are essential items.   It is also important to have an emergency kit at work.  Note:  keep the expiration dates of non-perishable goods, dry goods, and other foods on your calendar.

Proceeding a loss by the Vancouver Canucks a crowd of individuals took to the streets.   The cost was almost $5 million in damages.  Damages were done to downtown businesses, civilians, and emergency vehicles.

"Michael urges citizens of Vancouver to contact Police with any information to bring those involved with the Stanley Cup Final Riots to justice."

Update: Thanks to the efforts of Michael Bublé and others many of the suspects were able to be held accountable for their crimes.  According to a news reporter from the The Vancouver Sun, “a total of 887 criminal charges have been approved against 300 suspects.  Of those, 274 pleaded guilty, including all young people charged.  Vancouver police note, however, that there was one man not included in the Crown’s tally, making the number charged 301.”

4 Tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil for the pasta
1 Tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil for roasting tomatoes, white (or green) asparagus, and mushrooms
4 Tablespoons of rice wine vinegar
6 fresh, ripe tomatoes (organic)
1 cup Cotija cheese, grated
1 cup Panela cheese, grated
1 bunch white asparagus or green (organic)
16 ounces of baby bella mushrooms (organic)
1/2 cup of scissor snipped fresh curly parsley (organic)
1/2 cup of scissor snipped basil (organic)
zest of 1/2 lemon (organic)
juice of 1/2 lemon (organic)
Serves 16

Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (204.444 degrees Celsius).

Follow pasta directions on box, cook pasta until al dente (both boxes).
Drain the water from the pasta in a large colander or two smaller colanders.
Pour the pasta into a very large bowl or two smaller bowls (If using two smaller bowls, remember to equally divide the ingredients).
Season the pasta with the salt and pepper.
Add the olive oil and rice wine vinegar.
Gently mix  and set aside to cool to room temperature.

Dice the tomatoes and place them into a colander to drain.
Break off the tough ends of the asparagus, then chop the remaining asparagus into about 1/2” pieces.
Slice the baby bella mushrooms.
Drizzle a roasting pan with olive oil, place the tomatoes, asparagus, and mushrooms on the pan.  Roll the three ingredient around the pan to get an even coating.

Why there are Feathers in Your Cookies

Why there are Feathers in Your Cookies

L-Cysteine is produced from feathers, pig bristles and sometimes even human hair.  These days L-Cysteine can also be produced synthetically, yet apparently human hair remains one of the richest sources of this amino acid – it makes up about 14% of your hair - and there is a small industry in China making the additive from hair clippings.  (BBC News)

L-Cysteine is an additive in many of your store bought and fast food cookies, bagels, pizzas and other bread products.  Open your kitchen cabinet and check out the ingredient lists on some of the products.  L-Cysteine is an amino-acid that helps to condition dough items.  It is a legally permitted food additive, although there are some religious and vegan laws against the product.  If we can enjoy cookies, cupcakes, and breads made with only ingredients we know, why not?

The mission of Jesse Bluma at Pointe Viven is to live well, live sustainably, and liberate taste.   We get to live on a planet with a spectrum of food choices miles wide.  If we only eat from a small portion of that spectrum from store shelves, we are not actually living.   Jesse Bluma at Pointe Viven is committed to quality ingredients and excellent flavor.

Deserves a Cookie Award - Perfect Student Shares His Secret

The personal stories of triumph, hard work, and genuine achievement do not always make headline news.  Yet, we take notice when a person is able to break through the minutiae of what often constitutes news.  Marshall Rule is one of those rare individuals that makes us take genuine notice.

"Marshall Rule...graduated from Lutheran High School in Orange on Thursday, June 2, without ever having missed a day of school, all the way from kindergarten.   He attended elementary school at Zion Lutheran school in Anaheim.

'Around sixth grade, I realized that I've made it this far ... might as well just try making it all the way from kindergarten to eighth grade.'  Marshall plans to study kinesiology at Cal State Fullerton."

Teacher’s Act of Bravery Goes Viral

The personal stories of triumph, hard work, and genuine achievement don't always make headline news.  Yet, we take notice when a person is able to break through the minutiae of what often constitutes news.  Martha Alanis is one of those rare individuals that makes us take genuine notice.

"A brave teacher in Monterrey, Mexico, who sang with her kindergartners to keep them calm during a drug shoot-out outside her school, has gained worldwide attention since the video of the episode went viral over the weekend.

Last Friday, Martha Rivera Alanis told her 15 pupils to place their faces on the floor, and repeated over and over again that everything was going to be fine."
