Imagine the aroma of freshly brewed coffee in the morning.  No waiting in line.  No big daily expense.  That is why a coffee machine is the right decision.  Selecting a coffee maker, especially with all the brand and model options, can be an arduous task.

Here is where expert knowledge in the kitchen, with food and drink, and trusted expertise comes in handy.  Many readers rely on Jesse Bluma at Pointe Viven as a source for how-to and where-to regarding cookery, culture, and community.  Follow the steps below to purchase the right coffee machine for you to end up with that delicious cup of coffee each day.

Consider the following items when examining coffee makers.

How much coffee do you typically consume each day?

Do you like an extreme, bold brew, or at least the option for an extreme brew?

How important is it for you, and anyone else that may be using the machine, to control the strength of the brew?

Will you want to program the time each day for the machine to make the coffee?

Does the machine have an automatic off?

Does the coffee maker have a clean function?

Is the machine made with BPA (Bisphenol-A, an estrogen-imitating chemical) free parts?

What kind of filter is included with the coffee machine?

Can the beeping sound be muted?

Next, consider your standards for flavor, temperature, space, and specialty functions (some coffee makers have options to make more than coffee).

For example, the Cuisinart 14 Cup Glass Carafe with Stainless Steel Handle Programmable Coffeemaker creates coffee that has excellent flavor, because the machine is designed to make the water flow nicely and to keep the water temperature at a good level.  The Cuisinart 14 Cup machine brews hotter coffee than some other coffee makers, making for a better brew, and the Cuisinart also has various temperature settings.  The ability to have a coffee brewed at a hotter, medium, or lower temperature is a great feature, depending on the weather or personal preference.  The gold tone, commercial style permanent filter and charcoal water filter also ensure an excellent brew.

Another feature to consider is what material is the carafe, or container, made of and what is the style of the lid and pour spout.  The BPA free material of the Cuisinart is key to health and flavor.  The glass carafe of the Cuisinart 14 Cup machine is also a perfect design, providing a clear view of the coffee dripping into the pot and the amount of joe in the container.  The large 14 cup carafe and spout that is wide enough for easy pouring is excellent for coffee consumers looking to drink more than one cup of coffee a day or wanting to serve guests at a party or event.

Cleaning is essential to the health of the coffee drinker, the flavor of the coffee, and longevity of the machine.  The Cuisinart 14 Cup machine has a self-cleaning feature.  An indicator light signals when it is time for the machine to decalcify.  Also, make sure to clean the carafe of any machine you purchase on a regular basis.

After considering the purchasing guide above, the Cuisinart 14 Cup machine is an excellent choice from a dependable company.  In 1971, “[e]namored by a demonstration of a restaurant food preparation machine in France, Carl Sontheimer and his wife, Shirley, are convinced they can adapt this technology to a useful home appliance for Americans.  Sontheimer, a retired MIT-trained physicist and accomplished cook, makes a daring decision to jump into the highly competitive housewares business with his own company called Cuisinart.”  In the late 1970s the business soared with more machines, appliances, and the famous Cuisinart food processor.  After much success the Cuisinart company was sold to the family-owned Conair Corporation in the late 1980s.

Fashion Portfolio: How to Choose Ties for a Power Suit by Jesse Bluma at Pointe Viven

Fashion Portfolio:  How to Choose Ties for a Power Suit

In life we may not become famous, infamous, or blockbusters. We do; however, have the power to become something more than those labels.  It is our savvy and confidence that allows us to rise above and experience living life with good taste.  Our travels, life experiences, and dreams are snapshots on the runway of our lives.  There is no better place than the now to make the best strides down that runway.   This is your epic, your life, so choose the label you wear wisely.

Knowing what to wear and how to wear it is a powerful skill.  Some readers are at an advanced level and have a personal style.  Some will go on to experiment with clothes, trends, and brands.  While others may be too intrepid to wear anything besides t-shirts and shorts.  Once you conquer the clothing world and develop a lifelong interest in dressing right, you will feel more inspired to shop and enjoy your home, social, and business life.

Not sure?  No need to be scared of labels, black-ties, white-ties, button-downs, or bespoke clothing.  Here is where expert knowledge and trusted expertise comes in handy.  Many readers rely on Jesse Bluma at Pointe Viven as their go-to source.  Let an enjoyable experience with these fashion recipes be your start.  If you are more advanced and comfortable with fashion items, share your ideas, purchases, and suggestions.

What we wear is powerful and attitude matters.  Remind yourself again:  You deserve to live well and be well.  Creating a closet of items right for you, along with excellent fitness, health, and life habits, is all an expression of how you respect yourself.  Knowing what to wear and executing fashion looks can be a challenge.  The guidelines, inspirations, and ideas in this article will spark your interest and get you wearing more than the same three items over-and-over.  As the notable custom tailor Alan Flusser observed, “A necktie’s motif, or pattern, expresses the poetry, the sense of whimsy, the psychology of the individual wearer.”

Models.  The images we see in ads, movies, and media can influence our goals and perceptions.  Keep in mind the people in those professions spend a lot of time and have a lot of time to look their best.  Or computer graphics best.  Rather than focusing on images in media, focus on what is the right fit, look, and use of clothes for you.  As I learned from fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, fashion is about what is trending in stores and style is more about your own personality.  Take a moment to reflect upon good fashion sense, your life, needs, and goals.  That will be the center of what gets you fashion fit.  Structure your closet and drawers with options for your various activities, career, the climate you live in, and seasons.

The Wardrobe Essentials.  It is key to make clothing selections with a long-term frame of mind.  Quality construction and timeless pieces are sharp and financially smart choices.  Know your measurements and proportions.  Take a look in the mirror to see what cuts, colors, shapes, and lengths are best for you.  There is a learning curve for going from being dressed by mom to dressing yourself, for your current physique, current life, and adventures.  Calvin Klein, business mogul and designer, once explained to me at a fashion show that what people wear should be modern, clean, and make them look their best.  Personal responsibility is at the heart of dressing well.  Study magazines, people in the streets, in school, models, and actors in your age range.  Also, seek out knowledgeable salespeople in stores and vintage shops.

Fashion Portfolio:  How to Choose Ties for a Power Suit

Suits have a long tradition in male and female wardrobes dating back to the 1700s.  The power suit came of age in the 1980s with sharper lines, blocks of color, and classic styling.  A power suit is one that conveys leadership and authority in the work environment.  Think Pierce Brosnan, Remington Steele.

The best of power suits is focused, thoroughly developed, smooth, and the look can be mastered within a few detailed steps.  Context is key.  Begin with personal style, body type, complexion, and then consider environment.  The setting, office, or event must be understood to know if a power suit is most appropriate to be worn.

Taste is also key in creating a well focused and smooth power suit.  A power suit goes from classic and conveying authority to ostentatious with the addition of a brash watch or off the rails with sporty sneakers.

The best ties for a power suit are the ones that bring together the look and provide focus.  A skinny tie is best for fashionable events or parties, not in boardrooms.  A wide tie is best for a power suit, finished off with a Windsor knot.  Clean, measured, and tailored are the characteristics of the power suit.  The right tie pulls together this wardrobe staple.

Justification to have a treat: Churned Creamery Review by Jesse Bluma

Justification to have a treat:  Churned Creamery

Justification to have a treat.  It is time to splurge when presented with ice cream that is well made, with quality ingredients, and with a good variety of flavors.  Churned Creamery has the heart of a 19th century ice cream parlor, contemporary sensibilities, and the nature of a restaurant.  Ice creams, sorbets, bakery items, and beverages are the menu with flavors such as green mint, California pistachio, and chocolate.  The wide variety of candy toppings, fresh fruit, flaky croissants, and gooey sauces is eye-catching.

The star on the menu is the CroCream.  Yes, a scoop of ice cream nestled inside a soft croissant with a choice of toppings, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and sauce.  These are in-house baked croissants that stand up to melted ice cream.  Insider tip:  if stopping in at Churned Creamery later in the day, ask for a fresh baked croissant or cone.

Options include single, double, or triple scoop.

Homemade Tahitian vanilla waffle cone, waffle bowl, or brownie bowl.

CroCream or CroCream with up to three toppings.

Ice cream:  dolce latte, Dutch chocolate, Irish mint, OREO, Salted Butter Caramel, and more.

Sorbets:  blood orange, mango, pineapple, and strawberry.

Toppings:  chocolate chips, toffee, jelly beans, nuts, fruits, cereals, cookies, and more.

Drizzles:  caramel, dark chocolate, Nutella, strawberry, and white chocolate.

Also, consider ordering a drink or item to-go, such as a milkshake, root beer float, handcrafted affogatos (ice cream drowned in a shot of espresso), or pint of ice cream.

The quality ingredients and technical equipment are the magic within the ice cream shop, by way of local and global sources, such as California dairy and equipment from Italy.  Approach the counter and be mesmerized by the ice cream churning in small batches.  The result of this small batch process is an extremely smooth ice cream, flavorful sorbets, and fun toppings.  The ability to customize orders gives customers a bounty of flavor combinations to play with, experiment with, and enjoy.  Kids, and the kids at heart, love to mix flavors and toppings.

Churned Creamery serves ice cream that is very rich and creamy in texture because it has a higher ratio of ingredients to base in comparison to traditional ice cream.  That means the ice cream freezes at a lower temperature point and the outcome is a stronger and more prominent flavor.  Italian sorbet machines are key to this craftsmanship and ice cream making process at  Churned Creamery.

Freezer full of hand-packed fresh ice cream choices.

Pineapple Sorbet

Anna Blackman, the founder and chef of Churned Creamery, attended Gelato School in Italy.  Through hard work and great skill Blackman developed the recipes for the ice creams, sorbets, and pastries.  Her concept of an ice cream parlor is well established in tradition, good taste, and modern technology.

“We believe the three most important elements to good ice cream are:
Quality Ingredients, Preparation, Technique, Creative Passion.  We are
committed to serving ice cream and other frozen dessert treats using
fresh, natural ingredients and promoting business practices that respect
the environment and create positive social impact in our communities.
Our unique ability to integrate state of the art technology and challenge
old notions of the classic ice cream allows us to offer customers a unique
and decadent ice cream experience.  Our Customers Will Always Find,
Fresh Milk, Fresh Cream, Fresh Fruit, Simple Ingredients, Healthy Alternatives.
and Non-Dairy Options.”

Satisfying Eats: The Cali Bandito Taco by The SlideBar and Gringo Bandito

Satisfying Eats:
The Cali Bandito Taco by The SlideBar and Gringo Bandito

The SlideBar is a celebration of food, music, and local rock and roll history.  Sean Francis, owner of The Continental Room and the Sky Lounge, partnered with Jeremy Popoff, lead guitarist of Lit, to create SlideBar.  The restaurant and music hot spot is near the Fullerton Transportation Center, a historic train depot dating back to 1923.

This local establishment makes a mark with an interior of collectible music items, including a drum set from No Doubt, a guitar from Sublime, and murals of Orange County stars The Righteous Brothers, The Offspring, and Gwen Stafani.  The memorabilia catches the eye of patrons and encourages people to discover the history of music in the area and sparks conversation between customers.  Additionally, the large patio is an active environment with an expansive bar, seating, and space for taking in the sounds of live bands.

“The Slidebar is an independently owned and operated Rock ‘n’ Roll establishment.  We are proud to celebrate the history of Orange County music, while offering the best food, drinks, and entertainment around.   A sizable portion Orange County music history goes back over a half a century and can actually be traced right here, to our very own parking lot in Downtown Fullerton. This is where Leo Fender created possibly the most important contribution to Rock ‘n’ Roll ever – the Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster electric guitars.  Since then, Orange County has been consistently delivering major contributions to the music world.”

Recently The SlideBar partnered with Gringo Bandito to develop the Cali Bandito Taco, marrying the ingredients of a California burrito with Gringo Bandito red sauce—in house made tortillas.  Topped with sour cream and avocado, along with refried beans and chips.  The Cali Bandito vegetarian version is made with portobello mushrooms, rather than carne asada.  The carne asada and vegetarian versions of the Cali Bandito Taco hit the spot with a cold beer.  Not to worry vegetarians and those that simply enjoy portobello mushrooms…you will not miss the meat.

Compliments to Chef Branden LaGron and Gringo Bandito on a flavorful and fun taco.  Thank you for cooking up such a satisfying dish.  Gringo Bandito is a quality hot sauce to utilize for the tacos.  Dexter Holland, of The Offspring, is the founder of the California based company.  “Gringo Bandito has 70% less salt than other major competitors and contains no preservatives”.  The low sodium content makes it easy for chefs to regulate the flavor, and is especially good for those wanting to be or needing to be a bit more health conscious.

Where to Eat Now: Eveleigh Review by Jesse Bluma at Pointe Viven

Where to Eat Now:  Eveleigh Review

Eveleigh [Ever-Lee] is best known for impressive views, great cocktails, outdoor seating, and brunch.  Countryside meets city at this secluded spot with an expansive view overlooking the city atop Sunset Boulevard.  A lush country garden with fountain greets customers at the front of the restaurant.  Walk through the secluded garden and inside to the chic bar and indoor seating.  The back patio is where to brunch in Los Angeles.  Sip on cocktails, enjoy the New American fare, and have some laughs with friends in the tree house setting, among branches, potted garden, and towering city structures.

“Eveleigh embraces the original identity of the historic structure it inhabits:  an intimate and unpretentious residence built upon an orchard in 1923.  Whether relaxing in the enchanting front garden, saddling up to the rustic reclaimed bar, or dining on our garden patio as Los Angeles twinkles in the background, you will feel at home.  Eveleigh is country comfort: a genuine neighborhood restaurant and bar, where friends, community and family gather on The Sunset Strip.  Menus are subject to change based on seasonal availability.”

Nick Hatsatouris, Nick Mathers, and Lincoln Pilcher, the Australian restauranteur trio, created Eveleigh in L.A.  Additionally, Mathers and Pilcher developed Kingswood, Ruby’s Cafe, and Moby’s in New York.  Pilcher is a former rugby player and model who teamed with Mathers to first open Ruby’s.  From coffee and cupcakes, to burgers, and more, these restauranteurs have collaborated on some of the best hot spots in N.Y. and L.A.  Eveleigh, named after a town in Sydney, Australia, embodies the modern rustic taste and the farm-to-table philosophy of Mathers and Pilcher.

There are numerous dining options in Los Angeles, California.  Each of the neighborhoods, from Downtown to Hollywood, Santa Monica to Echo Park, and Beverly Hills has a multitude of restaurants for good eats.  Here is where my expert knowledge of cooking, restaurants, and trusted expertise comes in handy.  Many readers rely on Jesse Bluma at Pointe Viven as a source for how-to and where-to regarding cookery, culture, and community.  Reserve a table at Eveleigh and enjoy.
